HRH The Prince of Wales visits Maesyronnen Chapel

6 February 2014

Our patron, HRH The Prince of Wales, visited the Maesyronnen Chapel, Hay-on-Wye in Powys on a royal visit to Wales last week.

HRH The Prince of Wales, who last visited a Landmark in 2004 on a visit to Dolbelydr shortly after its opening, is a strong supporter of The Landmark Trust and has been our patron since 1993.

Director of The Landmark Trust, Dr Anna Keay said: “Despite the rain the Prince of Wales was in very good spirits during his visit to Maesyronnen Chapel on 31 January. After viewing the chapel itself he visited us in the Landmark cottage. Landmark Chairman, Neil Mendoza, Jo Thomas, housekeeper, and I showed him the building and he admired the quality of the building and furnishings. Afterwards we had tea and Jo’s famous Welsh Cakes in front of a roaring fire. He spoke warmly of the work of Landmark and we told him of future plans, before he headed off to spend the weekend in his house in Carmarthenshire.”

The congregation and trustees of the 18th Century chapel placed the building in the careful hands of The Landmark Trust in 1985, to take on repair work needed to both the chapel and cottage.  Minor alterations were made and completed in 1986 but it’s basic character, one of the earliest remaining examples of nonconformist meeting houses, remains.

Maesyronnen Chapel is a simple, cosy cottage that sleeps up to 4 people, with good walks and fantastic views of both the Black Mountains and the river Wye.
