Repelling the invader

Our efforts to eradicate the non-native and invasive Rhododendron plants were reinvigorated in 2024.

Rhododendrons once threatened the survival of the Lundy Cabbage, however these invasive plants are now under control. Major support for this project has been gratefully received from The Banister Charitable Trust which has funded extensive rope access works to remove plants growing across the extreme east cliffsides. This, coupled with continued support from the Lundy Field Society, means that the vast extent of the plateau has now been covered by search and removal work parties, allowing the Lundy Cabbage and other native species space to flourish.

The Lundy Cabbage, Coincya wrightii, is only found on Lundy and is one of the few plants that are endemic to Britain. As such it is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
