Virtual tours of Calverley Old Hall
Calverley Old Hall has evolved and changed many times over the years, starting as a smaller fourteenth century medieval first floor hall, expanding into a much larger manor house and later divided into tenanted cottages.
Thanks to a grant from the National Heritage Lottery Fund, we have been able to reimagine how Calverley Old Hall might once have looked in its historcial heyday, as well as documenting how the building appeared before our works began.
Explore 16th-century Calverley Old Hall
It is hard to imagine how the building might have looked at its peak, when the Calverley family lived here. The 1530s were a time of great upheaval in England due to Tudor King Henry VIII’s Protestant Reformation and separation from the Catholic Church . So who would have lived at Calverley Old Hall during this time? Rather confusingly, most of the Calverley family were named either Walter or William, and during the 1530s, both Walter (IV) and William (V) would have lived at Calverley Old Hall. Whilst Walter fought for Henry VIII in France and was knighted for his services, his son William did not share such good fortune, and was instead briefly imprisoned in the Tower of London for refusing to give up his Catholic faith after the Reformation. He was released after repenting for his mistakes, and later knighted like his father.
Using archaeological evidence and the latest digital modelling technologies, we can now explore the Great Hall as it was in the 1530s and get a glimpse into what it might have been like to live here when Walter and William called Calverley Old Hall home.
