The creation of digital 3D ‘twins’ of real-world objects offers wide-ranging benefits for the museum and heritage sectors.  From enhancing public-facing digital collections catalogues to providing sub-millimetre accurate data for preservation and research purposes, 3D models can engage, inform and support curation.

However, the capture of 3D data has traditionally been laborious, costly and requiring of advanced expertise.  Techniques such as photogrammetry, whilst providing viable results, often do not prove cost-effective, with the result that many heritage organisations have yet to employ digital 3D approaches within their processes in meaningful ways.  The introduction of scanning technologies, now commonly in the form of small, portable, hand-held units, has significantly changed this landscape – incorporating 3D data is now a much more achievable goal.

This workshop will explore what 3D scanning can offer heritage practice, covering the use of 3D scanned data within the fields of conservation/preservation, collections curation and public-engagement.  It will also detail the limitations of scanning technologies, assess practical considerations and outline potential costs.  The workshop will incorporate demonstrations using the scanners from leading manufacturer Artec, which typically capture data at resolutions of 0.1–0.3mm in a matter of seconds.

This workshop is led by the team at Heritage 360, University of York, who are currently building a 360° digital interactive model of Calverley Old Hall. With thanks to lottery players, and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are able to offer this event free of charge as well as offering a small travel bursary to enable participation.
