During our recent repair of Grade I Listed Calverley Old Hall, the Landmark Trust have worked hard to make improvements to the accessibility of the building. However, as with all historic buildings, this has proved challenging - and it hasn't always been possible to introduce all accessibility features. This day will be a chance to discuss with the team at Calverley Old Hall, and learn from our experiences here in order to identify ways to maximise accessibility where possible in historic building restoration projects.
This continuing professional development event is particularly helpful for those working in the Heritage, Building Conservation or Hospitality sectors.
The day will include sessions focusing on:
- Considerations to make when preparing to start a project
- Challenges and key learnings from the major repair project at Grade I Listed Calverley Old Hall
- Best practice guidance from a professional accessibility consultant
The day will also include a tour of Calverley Old Hall to see and discuss some of the accessible features included in the repair and there will be time for questions throughout the day.
With thanks to lottery players, and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are able to offer this event free of charge as well as offering a small travel bursary to enable participation.
Speakers
Sessions will be led by members of the project team who have worked on the rescue of Calverley Old Hall, including Landmark Trust Project Manager Linda Lockett, Project Engagement Officer Hannah Thompson and Cowper Griffith Architects Partner Karen Lim. There will also be a session led by accessibility consultant Martin McConaghy from IDACS (UK) Ltd, who consulted with us on our Community Space and on site interpretation.
On the day
The workshop will take place in our newly restored Community Space at Calverley Old Hall, Woodhall Road, Calverley, LS28 5NL. The Community Space is located at the rear of the building, and is accessed via the Community Garden. It will be signposted on the day.
Arrival: 10am for a 10.15am start. The event is scheduled to finish at 3.00pm.
Lunch will be provided. Please indicate any allergies or dietary requirements on the order form when booking.
Accessibility
We want our workshops to be as accessible as possible. The room where most of the day will take place is on the ground floor, with level access. In the main building there is a lift to the first floor, and a lift down to the main kitchen and dining space. There are some areas of the building which are unfortunately only accessible by a few steps. Please include details of any access needs or special requirements you have in the booking form. If necessary, we will be in touch with you prior to the event to discuss individual needs.
For further details please read our Access Guide for the Landmark, and our Access Guide for the Community Space.
We don’t want finances to be a barrier to participation. We are offering a small travel bursary for attendees to help with travel costs. Please indicate on your booking form if you would like to apply for this, up to a value of £30 per attendee.
Getting here
The building is located in the centre of Calverley, at the bottom of Woodhall Road. There is ample on street parking in the surrounding area, we would just ask that you please park considerately for our neighbours. Donating to The Landmark Trust
As a charity, the Landmark Trust relies on donations to support our work. We couldn’t have rescued over 200 Landmarks without the support of people like you.
Your support saves historic buildings in danger of being lost forever and makes them available for all to experience and enjoy.
Your donation could help train the craftspeople needed to restore buildings like this, or it could offer opportunities to young people to experience history first-hand, through our open days and free stays for study groups.
We would be delighted if you felt able to add a gift to your booking today. We can’t wait to stay in touch and show you the difference your support has made. Thank you!
